CORBEV      Continuously Outboard Recharged Battery Electric Vehicle

EV               Electric Vehicle

FFV             Flexible Fuel Vehicles

HEV             Hybrid Electric Vehicle

ICE              Internal Combustion Engine

ICEV            Internal Combustion Engine Vehicle

A car that has a conventional gas-powered engine.

IMA             Integrated Motor Assist

A bigger electric motor and uses more electricity to power the vehicle.

ISAD            Integrated Starter Alternator with Damping hybrid.

Provides stop/start capabilities and enables the electric motor to power the vehicle when necessary.

LEV             Low Emission Vehicle

A vehicle has a LEV rating of emitting less than 3.4 grams per mile of carbon monoxide.

PHEV           Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle

RESS           Rechargeable Energy Storage System

Alternative Fuels          The choice of any fuel other than the traditional selections, gasoline and diesel.

Biodiesel                       A diesel fuel replacement or additive, biodiesel is made

from vegetable oil or animal fat.

Biomass               Derived from biological material, predominantly vegetation, biomass includes biofuels such as biodiesel and ethanol.

Blends                  A transitional fuel, blends are mixtures of traditional and alternative fuels, such as E85 and B20.

Compound Hybrid          Combined series and parallel hybrid system.

Electricity            Electricity is considered an alternative since it is used to power the motors in electric vehicles.

Emission standards       The amount of emissions a vehicle is allowed to emit and still be considered acceptable for the environment.

Ethanol                Ethanol is an alcohol fuel that's derived mainly from grain.

FlexFuel               Flexible fuel vehicles are specially designed to run on gasoline or any blend of up to 85% ethanol (E85).

Full Hybrid           Indicates a hybrid car that is able to start out at low speeds without the need for gasoline.

Hybrid Vehicle     A hybrid car is a car that uses two or more forms of power.

Hydrogen             Most commercial hydrogen is refined from petroleum, but can also be made by passing electricity through water (electrolysis).

Methanol              Methanol is an alcohol fuel that's derived primarily from coal.

Mild Hybrid           A hybrid that is able to start out from standing still only if the combustion engine is engaged, using the electric part of the motor mainly for assisting the gas engine when more power is needed.

Natural Gas         A by-product of oil drilling and coal mining, natural gas can also be harvested from natural gas fields.

Parallel Hybrid     The fuel tank supplies the engine with gasoline at the same time sets of batteries are supplying power to the electric motor.

Plug-in Hybrid      Owners have the option of plugging in their cars to recharge them, although this is not a requirement.

Propane               Also known as liquefied petroleum gas, propane is a by-product of natural gas and crude oil refining.

P-Series                Colorless, clear liquid fuels between 89-93 octane, P-series fuels are designed to be used in flex-fuel vehicles.

Series Hybrid       The car's gas-powered engine turns a generator that either charges the batteries, or sends power to the electric motor, which in turn is the force behind the transmission.

Stop / Start System       This is a feature of the mild hybrid and shuts off the car's engine when it would otherwise be idling and wasting energy, and then restarts it instantly when needed.

Torque                 Power that launches a vehicle from a stop.

Volt                      The International System unit of electric potential and electromotive force, equal to the difference of electric potential between two points on a conducting wire carrying a constant current of one ampere when the power dissipated between the points is one watt.

Watt                     An International System unit of power equal to one joule per second.
